Should you worry about the obesity of long-haul truck drivers?

On Behalf of | Nov 15, 2021 | Personal Injury

When you pass tractor-trailers, you probably carefully watch them ensure they maintain their lanes. You also undoubtedly realize the importance of not driving in a trucker’s blind spots. The personal weight of long-haul truck drivers, though, likely does not cross your mind. Maybe it should.

According to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, almost 70% of long-haul truck drivers are overweight or obese. By comparison, only 31% of all American workers fall into these categories. Regrettably, a trucker’s obesity may put your life in danger.

The risk of developing serious medical conditions

Doctors and scientists have long studied the negative health effects that often come with being overweight or obese, and the results are clear. Carrying excess weight increases a person’s risk of developing serious medical conditions, including diabetes, heart disease, cancer and other ailments. Each of these medical conditions may impair a trucker’s ability to control his or her semi-truck, unfortunately.

The dangers of distracted driving

Because long-haul truck drivers must meet tight pickup and delivery deadlines, there is often not much time to pull off the road for a sit-down meal. If truckers eat behind the wheel, they may divert their attention from the driving task. Put simply, even short periods of distracted driving may increase a trucker’s accident risk.

The responsibility of the trucker

Long-haul truck drivers have a legal duty to drive reasonably. This duty includes being healthy enough not to be a danger to other motorists. If a trucker ignores weight-related medical concerns, he or she may be breaching this duty.

Ultimately, if you suffer a catastrophic injury in a collision with an overweight or obese trucker, it may be advisable to investigate whether the trucker’s weight played a role in the crash.
