How to help your teenage driver stay safe on the road

On Behalf of | Mar 18, 2022 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Driving privileges are a highly-anticipated right of passage for your teenager. However, car accidents are the second leading cause of death for this age group, and safe driving practices could have prevented a large number of these accidents, whether fatal or not.

To ensure your teenager remains safe on the road, it is important to take steps to secure his or her safety before he or she gets behind the wheel and while on the road.

Eliminate distractions

Car passengers, cell phones, playlists and other mental distractions can prove highly disruptive to new teenage drivers. Make sure your teenager is aware of the best practices when it comes to handling distractions while operating a vehicle, and establish designated places to stow his or her phone while the car is in drive.

Obey the rules of the road

Though your teenager must pass his or her driver’s certification tests prior to receiving a license, you never can be too diligent about mastering the laws and regulations of the road. As you ride along with your teenager, take time to review safety rules, including seat belt laws, speed limits and traffic pattern guidelines.

The more experience your teen can gain, the more comfortable he or she will be when driving. Make sure your teen practices in a variety of weather, traffic and lighting conditions. Additionally, encourage him or her to develop solid habits of checking the car’s speed, mirrors and surrounding vehicles so these safe practices become second nature when you are not around.

Always practice setting a good example for your teenager as you drive as well. When everyone in your household commits to safe driving practices, you are all more likely to stay safe and sound when on the road.
